In 1236, a Dominican Friary was founded in the vicinity of Sollys Orchard, including a gatehouse on the site of the orchard. The majority of buildings were demolished by 1650, with the exception of the guesthouse and refectory buildings which are still standing today. Eventually the site, which is adjacent to the River Stour, came into the ownership of the Solly family, until acquired in 1972 by the city council to be used as public open space. The site was overgrown until a project was started in 2005 to enhance the site. This has involved the planting of religiously-themed apple trees donated by the Brogdale Trust, the home of the National Fruit Collection.
